Parent-to-Parent Program- [Back]

The mission of the Parent-to-Parent program is to bring together parents facing similar challenges in raising their children with special needs. We believe that sharing experiences provides strength and support to each other.

Seeking Support

Parents may contact us in search of a listening ear—another parent who has faced some of the same issues and concerns as they now face. This may be in response to a new diagnosis, a new challenge, or just to recharge their batteries.

Sharing Support

One of the greatest gifts that parents gain in raising their children is experience. In offering the wisdom that comes from each challenge we face, we lighten the load of those who follow us while validating the value of the lessons we learn.

How does the program offer Parent-to-Parent support?

The Parent-to-Parent Coordinator makes direct contact with a parent who has completed a Parent-to-Parent Request Form. They will discuss the parent’s concerns. The Coordinator will then search our database for a Support Parent who can meet the needs of the parent requesting a listening ear. A request may be focused on issues such as a child’s diagnosis or developmental stage; life activities such as recreation, childcare issues, or developing friendships; or sibling concerns.

Who are Support Parents?

A Support Parent is someone who is trained to listen, share concerns, and offer information and support, with respect for confidentiality and cultural and individual differences.

How to participate?

Parents who would like to be matched with a Support Parent can download and complete the Parent Match Permission Forms (below) and mail them directly to our Parent-to-Parent Coordinator, Linea Luck Pearson at: MDPH-Central Regional Health Office, 180 Beaman Street, West Boylston, MA 01583.

Parents who would like to offer support to another parent should contact your Regional Coordinator to find out when our next local offering of Listening and Learning, our support parent training, is scheduled, or call us toll-free: 1-800-905-TIES (8437). The Family TIES Support Parent Agreement (below) can be completed and brought to the training, or blank forms will be made available.
